Press Release

LAXART and Woven Accents are pleased to present a two-day exhibition of new textiles by artist Cole Sternberg. For this body of work, Sternberg created a series of unique hand-painted rugs, each painted on and exposed to the elements of Los Angeles. During this process, the works decayed, faded, and created additional abstract components as they were affected by human and natural elements. For instance, an early 20th century Indian rug was pounded by the waves on the rocks of Point Dume in Malibu, while others were tramped on the sidewalks of downtown Los Angeles, chlorinated at the bottom of a Hollywood Hills pool, and wine-stained at a Griffith Park beggar’s banquet. As the artist described, “Antique and vintage rugs have fascinated me for some time. Their quality, durability, design aesthetic, and nomadic nature all spoke to an idea that is fleeting in our current concepts of construction. Keeping that in mind, I wanted to address a selection of historically relevant rugs within the context of their existence in Los Angeles and assist in continuing their individual journeys.” Sternberg’s concept readdresses the original textiles—each a work of art in itself—their anonymous creators, and their origins through the application of different painterly and environmental processes. The final result is a unique piece, each accompanied by a photographic study of its Los Angeles-based ecological experience. The entire collection of rugs and photographic studies will be published as a monograph in late 2016.
