LA><ART Presents Bobbi Woods at Mondrian Los Angeles
Aug 3 - Sep 1, 2011

Adapting strategies similar to those employed by the Hollywood promotional machine, Los Angeles-based artist Bobbi Woods makes use of the power and glamor of movie posters to block and to tease, often stripping away the graphics, leaving only a simple geometry or a single suggestive word. Woods’ modified posters are amended by an awareness of feminist appropriation strategies, all while maintaining a sense of visual pleasure and desire. In the series of posters on view, Woods uses black enamel paint to superimpose shapes, blocking the original imagery of the poster. These are not gestures of censorship, or redactions of hot content, but methods by which Woods playfully withholds information, titillating us.

Wood’s video also on view, entitled “California Light”—white text subtitling a black background—is similar to her posters, an equally spare composition albeit with a moody soundtrack. The video features disjointed sentences, snippets from a collection of the artist’s own writings or bits extracted from movie scripts and poems. Altogether they create an otherworldly conversation, a text for a movie that only exists as words swimming on a screen. The artist implores her audience to look, and then to look again—to seek the “potential for pleasure” inherent in each work even as it is being critically regarded.
