Press Release | download PDFLA><ART is pleased to present Los Angeles based artist Sam Falls’ first institutional solo exhibition in Los Angeles
Sam Falls: Sam Falls Sam Falls’s November exhibition includes work at LA><ART and two concurrent outdoor projects with Los Angeles Public Domain (L.A.P.D.), a public sculpture in Plummer Park and a billboard on La Cienega. The wall works consist of metal bars that were later used to create prototypes for the final wind chimes suspended in the gallery. Along with these wall works, the LA><ART exhibition includes wind chimes placed in national forests and parks across California: in Big Sur, Joshua Tree National Park, Redwoods National Forest, the Klamath Mountains, Lassen National Forest, Los Padres National Forest, Cleveland National Forest, Yosemite National Park, Mammouth Lakes in Inyo National Forest, Sequoia National Forest and San Bernardino National Forest. For eight months prior to the exhibition the wind chimes reverberated in the wilderness—tintinnabulations in pine coves, boulder fields, mountain ridges and coastal escarpments across the state. In the weeks and days before the opening, the artist returned to the sites listed above to retrieve the pieces. Having been weathered by the elements the chimes carry the holistic marks of exposure. The hanging metal, wood and wire each show the pendency that is a signature of Falls’s dual interest in representation and abstraction. Here distinct microclimatic changes in California are evident as the chimes represent something outside their own materiality. Falls’s process with the wind chimes reaches a unique representation by collaborating with specific materials and their ability to absorb time and place. Though different than the weathered chimes, the two-dimensional works carry out an active relationship of production over time in the studio. By painting on the photograph with the same bars pictured, the wall works question representation by engaging inter-medium indexicality of the same subject on the same plane.

This exhibition is accompanied by a billboard showing a wind chime in situ (on La Cienega, between Venice and Washington Boulevards). Additionally, a new catalog including documentation of these site interventions, artist travelogues and critical texts by leading writers will be made in 2014. In addition to the November exhibition, LA><ART will team up with Ballroom Marfa in early 2014 to co-produce an outdoor sculpture in Texas. About the Public Sculpture LA><ART and L.A.P.D. present a Public Sculpture by Sam Falls in Collaboration with the City of West Hollywood’s Art on the Outside Program. The sculpture is located at Plummer Park, 7737 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Inspired by the history of minimalist sculpture, Sam Falls is invested in experimentation with process and materials, and in applying photographic operations to the realm of sculpture. Falls has created a post-minimalist UV powder coated aluminum sculpture whose paint will fade in the sunlight over time. About the Billboard LA><ART and Sam Falls have teamed up to present a public billboard currently up on view on La Cienega Boulevard facing north between Venice and Washington Boulevards. The billboard image depicts a windchime in a lush, wooded area corresponding directly to Fall’s solo exhibition currently on view at LA><ART through December 21, 2013. About the Artist Sam Falls obtained his BA from Reed College and his MFA from ICP-Bard. His recent solo shows include exhibitions at Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich, Balice Hertling, Paris, with upcoming shows at T293, Rome, and Hannah Hoffman, Los Angeles. Falls lives and works in Los Angeles.
