Wyatt Kahn’s practice draws on an interplay of drawing, painting and sculpture. He is well-known for his abstract paintings of cut and reassembled canvases, fit together to create new forms that evoke architecture and loose figuaration. His lesser seen, yet parallel printmaking practice pushes his handmade compositional method into unique woodblock, monoprints, drawings and collages. LA><ART is pleased to present this side of Kahn’s work in his first institutional exhibition in the United States. Many of the works on paper are preparatory drawings for potential paintings and on 

first look have a relationship to formal graphic modernism. Closer inspection reveals he is not solely interested in clean, discrete forms. Rotating graphic arrangements, palimpsestic layers of erasure and experimentation with color are all part of his working process. The folds, glue and fingerprints from labor-intensive printmaking remain on full view. For Kahn, breaks in the ink and wavering of lines act as small ruptures recording the process of their own making and are key to an understanding of his larger practice. There is an incomplete quality, a certain acceptance of failure. Kahn describes this aspect of his work as having a natural failure to them, and those elements of human error show more completely, the hand of the artist.

 

About the Artist

 

Wyatt Kahn is based in Brooklyn, NY he received his MFA from Hunter College and since exhibited in galleries and museums internationally including Hannah Barry Gallery, London, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zurich, and DUVE, Berlin and T293, Rome. His exhibition at LA><ART will be his first solo show in Los Angeles.
